NVR ARTICLE ON LITTLE LEAGUE MOM OF THE YEAR

National Little League Mom of the Year

12 HOURS AGO  •  BY MARTY JAMES

There is so much that Michele Manahan does as a board member for Napa Little League baseball.

She is the secretary, registrar and information officer.

She is the webmaster, and is in charge of posting updates about the league on Facebook.

She is the one who puts the season schedule together for each of the major, minor “A” and “B,” rookie and challenger teams.

She is also the team mom for Reliable Refrigeration, a Napa National major division team. Her husband, Rick Manahan, is the manager, and their son, Nicolas, is a member of the team, playing catcher and first base and batting third in the order at the Royce Hall Complex at Garfield Park. There are 500 players, ages 6 to 12, in the league.

If that’s not enough, Michele often times will play catch in the front yard of their home with Nicolas, 12, after dinner.

“To be doing all of those jobs is amazing. It’s a testament to her dedication to the league,” said Terri Duban-Orona, a past Napa Little League president and the District 53 Little League player agent. “The whole family has been an asset to Napa Little League and Little League Baseball in general.”

Little League International has taken notice of Michele’s involvement.

Each year, Little League offers players the chance to write an essay, asking them why their mom should be Mom of the Year in a national contest.

Nicolas, who recently completed his seventh-grade year at Redwood Middle School, submitted his essay, telling Little League officials, “I think my mom is the most amazing mom ever.”

On June 10, Little League International informed Michele, based on the submissions by her son, that she has been selected as the 2015 Little League Mom of the Year. As the recipient of this award, Michele and Nicolas will be Little League’s guests at this year’s Little League Baseball World Series in August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

“Your selection as the recipient of the Mom of the Year Award is a testament to your spirited and dedicated commitment to the ideals and goals of the Little League program,” Scott Rosenberg, director of public relations for Little League International, wrote in a letter to Michele. “You have been a shining example to your family and the other children in the Napa Little League of all that is positive and beneficial through volunteering and participating in the Little League program.”

The national Little League Mom of the Year Award was established in 1991 as a form of recognition and tribute to the millions of mothers in towns around the world who contribute their time and effort to the Little League program.

Rick Manahan will join Michele and Nicolas on the trip to Williamsport. Little League will cover the family’s transportation and hotel costs.

The Mom of the Year Award is presented during the Little League World Series.

“We have a huge board (of directors) and everybody does so much,” said Michele. “It’s an entirely volunteer-run organization. It takes a lot for that to happen. I’m proud of my part in it. I’m proud of the work I’ve done there.

“But honestly, I’m more proud of Nicolas because this wouldn’t have happened if he didn’t take the time and want to write the essay.”

Nicolas served as seventh-grade class president and plays baseball year round. In his essay, Nicolas wrote: “My mom deserves this, because for almost an entire week I only saw my mom for only a little bit and sometimes not at all because she was working on several different Little League things, just so it can be better for me and everybody else out there. My mom is always outside playing baseball with me and helping me to get better.”

Nicolas continued with his essay, writing that his mom is handling the scorebook and operating the scoreboard at games throughout the season.

“This is why I think my mom deserves to be Mom of the Year, and also I love her with all my heart and it would be an honor if she got picked.”

This is Michele Manahan’s third year on the board of directors. The family has been involved in Little League since 2001.

“They have a great relationship,” Rick Manahan said of Michele and Nicolas. “He’s a good sport. He loves the game.

“It is going to be an incredible trip for our family this summer going to Williamsport.”

It will be the family’s first trip to Williamsport. The 69th World Series – to be televised by ESPN, ABC, ESPN2 and ESPN3 – has U.S. and International brackets.

U.S. teams will come from the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, New England, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest and West. International teams are from Asia-Pacific, Australia, Canada, Caribbean, Europe-Africa, Japan, Mexico and Latin America. The 2015 Little League Baseball World Series concludes with the World Championship Game on Sunday, Aug. 30.

“I’m completely blown away that this happened,” said Michele Manahan, who is originally from Orange County in Southern California. “I feel like I’m just doing what a lot of other people are doing in trying to contribute in some way to the league, to make it successful for our whole community.”

Michele Manahan works at Hess Collection winery. Her work with Little League also entails assisting with registration.

“I just feel lucky that my son took the time to write a letter about his mom. To be there will be amazing,” she said. “I’m really excited honestly for Nicolas to be able to be there, because he adores baseball. He lives and breathes baseball. I’m excited to be there with him, especially. Watching the games will be awesome.”

Michele will be recognized at an awards breakfast, luncheon and on-field ceremony Aug. 27.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Duban-Orona. “It’s a testament to her time and effort she’s put into Napa Little League for many, many years, not just this past year when her son wrote his letter. I think just it’s wonderful that she’s being recognized. It’s so special and very well deserved.”
